How Warrior Woman Lisa Mateo Took a Leap of Faith & Launched a Kick-Ass Coaching Program for Women

You may have caught this boss lady / super mom on PIX 11 Morning News in New York, where she was a reporter and anchor for more than 15 years! Now, she’s changing things up as a fitness coach to inspire other women to live healthy balanced lives. We caught up with Lisa Mateo to get the updated scoop on her new career!

You’ve recently made a big change in your career, from TV host to starting your own business in the fitness industry!  Tell us, what sparked this amazing transformation?

Lisa: Fitness and sports have always been a part of my life growing up, from swimming, basketball and volleyball, to softball and track. I loved the competition. But as I grew older, started a family and dove into the world of TV news reporting, I realized how limited my time was. I found the answer in 1/2 hour workouts that I did from home, where I incorporated cardio and strength training. I began to see results and people noticed. It was then I decided to start a private online support group for those who wanted to join me on my journey, and fell in love with helping others live their best life inside and out.

After more than 15 years of 2 am wakeup calls for morning news, I decided to step aside and fulfill my passion for health and wellness. I now take my on camera and public speaking experience and combine it with my skills as a certified personal trainer, and speak at conferences, events and corporate workshops about the importance of incorporating a healthy lifestyle, developing the proper mindset, reinventing yourself and much more, as well as continue to coach people online. At the same time I continue my love for TV through my show, Celebrity Taste Makers.

What has been a life challenge for you that you were able to conquer?

Lisa: Not so much conquer, but a life challenge that I have been able to finally face after years of keeping it bottled up inside is dealing with past childhood traumatic experiences that affected my confidence. I realized that if I continued to keep them buried inside and remain a victim, I would never be able to move past them.  Now personal development has become a part of my life in turning trauma into triumph and pain into power. I look forward to helping other young girls and women along their journey.

What keeps you motivated to stay healthy?

Lisa: What keeps me motivated are the number of lives I have changed. The messages I receive are incredible. There’s nothing more gratifying than when someone tells you that you saved their life. My children also keep me motivated to stay healthy. As parents our kids look to us as role models, and I love seeing my children stay active and make healthy food choices because of how they see me live my life. Obesity is the fastest growing health problem in America and it’s my mission to change that.

What advice would you give to other woman who want to make a life change?

Lisa: My advice is to stop the limiting beliefs and excuses. There will never be enough time…you will never have the money to invest in yourself. You are worth it and you are capable of doing it. Think deeply about why you want to make that change and every time you try to put up another excuse remind yourself of that why. Write it on post it notes and stick them around the house, place that dress that you want to fit into on a hanger where you can see it every day. If it’s to live a longer and more present life for your family, set a family photo on your nightstand where you see it every morning.

Get rid of all the junk food in your house that is tempting you every time you open the refrigerator or pantry and replace them with healthier options. Most importantly, join a support group of like minded people who are going through similar struggles. Accountability is key. If you don’t have one, I know of one I can recommend:)

What is your favorite go-to snack?

Lisa: I’m always on the go, so having portable snacks with me is key so I don’t grab for unhealthy options out of desperation. Nuts, a cheese stick and fruit (like an apple, orange or banana) are my savior, as well as having my water bottle on hand. I drink 1/2 my weight in ounces every day. At home, it’s either an apple with peanut butter, celery sticks, carrots or whole grain crackers with hummus or plain greek yogurt with fresh berries.

Tell us a little bit about your training program.

Lisa: I know that time is the biggest issue when it comes to working out, so many of the programs I coach people through online are only a 1/2 hour a day, some only 4 days a week. We incorporate free weights and cardio and there is always a moderator to follow, so it’s appropriate for participants of all fitness levels. Convenience is another issue, especially with busy moms, so all of the workouts are streamed online and can be done from the comfort of your home on your schedule. I also host monthly challenges in the group for prizes to keep it fun and engaging.

Warrior Woman Sandi Lesueur Launches Urban Juve Skincare Line

It’s no secret that cannabis infused products are all the rage these days, but there’s one skincare line that’s grabbing the spotlight, and rightfully so! With its high-quality ingredients and glowing reviews, Urban Juve Skincare line is taking over the skincare marketplace. We caught up with the boss lady who is leading the way: Sandi Lesueur, President of Urban Juve and Director of Brand Development of the The Yield Growth Corp.

Tell us a little bit about your background.

SANDI: Skincare and wellness are a business niche that has defined my career from early days with M.A.C Cosmetics to my time with Oprah Winfrey's makeup artist Derrick Rutledge for the launch of his beauty brand to heading the expansion of Riversol Skincare with dermatologist Dr. Jason Rivers.  Sales based on relationships, product development knowledge and pushing the boundaries on a quest for quality and results are my focus and distinction. The global nature of our business inspires me as much as the brimming potential of new ingredient use such as hemp and CBD for skincare and wellness.

What gave you the inspiration to create your skincare line and what makes it unique?

SANDI: They say timing is everything and being first to market is a boon for business. Being introduced to the potential in the cannabis beauty and skincare world by a team of women with varied backgrounds -- so early in the game -- fueled my interest in Urban Juve. Seeing the results of early products has opened up our collective creative energy and the scientific exploration -- through partnerships with academics and labs -- is nothing short of invigorating. Every day is different, whether challenged by hurdles or celebrating successes. People coming together to back a new product is wonderful.

What's your daily skin care routine?

SANDI: Urban Juve is my daily go-to!  I’ve worked with dozens of brands but none of them keep my skin as hydrated and looking as healthy as Urban Juve. I believe in using clean, gentle products.  Keep it simple.  Cleanse/serum/moisturizer Weekly hydrating mask is a must too!  Too many people use too many products, and too harsh of ingredients

As a busy boss lady, how do you keep balance between your personal and professional life?

SANDI: I’m still trying to figure this one out. I travel often and when I return I put my family first.  I’m the happiest when my kids, and dog are all together.  I always make time for the people I care about.  I have an amazing group of women who continually push me to challenge myself in all areas and I know when I need to just rest and do nothing.

What are your favorite workout routines?

SANDI: I love to speed walk and ride my bike with my lab/retriever along the seawall near my home in Vancouver.  I eat healthily and take time to relax and meditate near the water.  I work hard and play hard!

If you could give any advice to your younger self, what would it be?

SANDI: It would be to believe in yourself no matter what and to surround yourself with kind, positive people.  Refresh your goals often and never be afraid to try new things. Being open has led to untold adventures in my personal and professional life!  I love life!  I believe it’s up to me to be happy and I certainly never limit myself.  Dare to dream!

Warrior Woman Nicole Meyers Takes on Kitchen Confidence For The Busy Mom

"Meal Planning Expert"  Business Owner, Food personality and Cookbook Author Nicole Meyers not only teaches busy moms and fellow foodies how to meal plan but she also hosts a slew of popular workshops for Corporate Wellness Menu Planning!

What inspired you to create Nibbles By Nic?

NIC: Witnessing the stresses that surround crazy-busy people having to prepare *21* meals a week can be daunting, overwhelming and super challenging. My goal is to create platforms, tips and tricks that provide the utmost kitchen confidence for working women with overwhelming schedules.

What are the advantages of meal prepping?

NIC: It provides tools that takes the stress out of everyday meal planning & entertaining which is crucial for busy women!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to dive into meal prepping for the first time?

NIC: Don't put too much pressure on yourself!  Start slowly and find a platform that works for you.  Whether it's a menu planning board, app or gathering magazine clippings of recipes you or your family want to try.

What is your favorite go-to meal?

NIC: I adore an all-in-one pan meal that is simple and can be prepped ahead of time! Few ingredients is a non-negotiation.

What's your workout routine?

NIC: I try and do something active most mornings. Whether it is a weight class, running, tennis, pilates or just walking my 100 pound bernadoodle up the hills in my neighborhood.

How do you maintain a work-life balance?

NIC: Lots of lists!  When there is something I need to do, I write it down in the "notes" of my phone so I don't forget.  Woman wear way too many hats, and multi-task to the "umph" degree constantly.  Being efficient with our time and carving out just a few hours a day to focus on 1-2 work tasks is a must for success and accomplishment.

Follow Nicole on Instagram for more great ideas & reach out to find out more about her workshops.

How Warrior Woman Candy Calderon is Leading the Way for Latinas Living Their Healthiest Life

Holistic health and wellness coach Candy Calderon is on a mission to help other Latinas live a healthier and vibrant life! We caught up with Candy to find out how she transformed her career to follow her passion for wellness after her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Candy Calderon 5 (2).jpg

What motivated you to become a holistic nutrition coach?

Candy: Everything started with my mom’s Cancer diagnosis. I have loved health & wellness all my life, but I really also love business. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business + Master’s Degree in Business which allowed me to travel the world for several years with different international corporations developing their business but always felt in my heart that health & wellness were my true calling.

My grandfather had passed away a few years before my mom was diagnosed, but after my mom’s breast cancer I knew I had to do something; she was, and still is my biggest inspiration and drive in life. I took it upon myself to learn everything needed to help her heal faster and naturally (without negating traditional medicine of course). After her miraculous recovery, everybody started asking me to share my story —which I did and soon discovered that helping others to learn about prevention, and how to lead healthier lives fulfilled me in a way I have never experienced before.

I then, decided to go back to school to get certified as a Holistic Health & Wellness Coach, and my Health & Wellness career began!

What inspired you to create the Glow Wellness Tour? What can attendees expect?

Candy: After attending HUNDREDS of wellness events that left me empty, like I couldn't relate, unrealistic and not at all speaking to the health & wellness challenges we face as women of color, some of us immigrants, and what's considered "minorities", I decided to help change the narrative. And that’s how the event was conceived!

A wellness event that caters to us, to our challenges and to our cultura... A wellness fiesta like no other focused on women like us (Latinas + Women Of Color & any other woman that identify with our culture, reality and specific needs!).

I wanted to create a platform where we would feel safe to interact to get in touch with our raices, our inner brujas, talk about mental health (very taboo in our society!), drink green smoothies and wellness potions like our abuelas used to make, and a few glasses of wine (or tequila!) in the process because it’s all about BALANCE.

I conceived it as a tour because I knew I wanted to take it on the road and touch as many women as possible. The kick off was in New York this past Nov. 3rd. which sold out in less than 2 weeks! Philly and Miami in the spring, and adding more cities as we grow. My plan is to take the tour to each city within the U.S. where we have great Latina population, so we help and empower as many women as possible!

What is your go-to healthy Latin meal?

Candy: I "healthy-fied" a very traditional Dominican recipe called Moro de Habichuelas (Rice & Beans), because I love it; it's one of my favs! I swapped the rice with quinoa to make it more wholesome, and healthy. You can find my Quinoa Moro recipe here!

What advice would you give to other women who want to change bad habits and lead a healthy lifestyle?

That our health & wellness journey is not linear, and one size does not fit all! In health there’s something called biodiversity, which means that we’re not created equal, and thus, what can help me thrive (a plant-based diet, or going to the opposite- a paleo diet for example) may not be good for you. So we have to be really careful, specially in the time of Google where we can “find” a cure to everything and anything at the tip of our fingers!

Go step by step, and build up healthy habits from the ground up so you don't get overwhelmed and learn to listen to your body!

Candy New (1) (1).jpeg

What's your favorite kind of workout?

Candy: Yoga is my go-to 100%, I also love low impact weight lifting to create definition instead of building tons of muscle, and a little cardio here and there :)

Where can people find you online and where is the next Glow Wellness event?

My web page www.candycalderon.com is where they can find everything compiled in one place.

But from social media, Instagram is my absolute favorite and where I’m more active and have the most fun. You can find me at @candycalderon_

Next Glow Wellness Tour is in New York, October 26th and they can get tickets right NOW at our website www.glowwellnesstour.com
